Check out asda’s range of fairtrade produce during fairtrade fortnight, from 25 february to 9 march – and through the rest of the year

Grapes Asda’s Fairtrade grapes from South Africa are supplied from farms where ownership will become shared with its workers. Grapes contain 80 per cent water, making them super juicy. If you ever want to peel them, pop them into the freezer and peel when frozen. Add chilled grapes to pasta dishes and salads or simply serve with mature Cheddar.

Avocado Asda’s Fairtrade avocados are grown in South Africa and Mexico with a ‘Fairtrade minimum price’ agreement. This means that the growers are guaranteed a sustainable production price for their crop even when the world market values are below this level. Often used in skincare products, avocados are also known as ‘nature’s butter’ because of their smooth and creamy texture. Avocados are ready to eat when their skin dimples if lightly pressed. Take the stone out by cutting the avocado lengthways to the stone and twisting to make two halves. Spear the stone with a knife to remove. Squeeze lemon or lime juice on the flesh to prevent it discolouring.

Pineapples The name ‘pineapple’ derives from the Spanish explorers who believed the fruit looked like a pine cone, and English explorers who said it was juicy like an apple. Asda Fairtrade pineapples are supplied by farmers in Ghana and Costa Rica. The workers and local community in these regions benefit greatly from the Fairtrade scheme. Social premiums paid are invested in schools and healthcare. Use the juice to tenderise meat and as a marinade.

Limes Citrus fruits, grown in Morocco, South Africa and Egypt, are one of the latest additions to Asda’s Fairtrade range. These are perfect for detoxifying the body. Add lime juice and a spoonful of honey to a glass of hot water for a morning energy boost. To get the most juice out of a lime, warm it in the microwave for a few seconds or use the palm of your hand to roll the fruit on a flat surface before squeezing.

Easy peel citrus As their name suggests, it takes no time at all to peel the thick skin of these juicy easy peelers. The pith of the fruit also comes off with the rind to provide perfect segments ready for sweet and savoury salads or baking. As they’re easy to get to grips with, they’re also a great idea for little hands and their lunchboxes.

Roses Asda Fairtrade roses are grown in Kenya with suppliers benefiting from a higher price. The extra revenue generated helps to improve social conditions and fund local projects. Always trim roses at an angle with a non-serrated knife. Always recut flowers and use flower food to make them last longer.
