Ingredients
- 500g strong white flour
- 1.5tsp salt
- 1tsp caster sugar
- 2tsp fast-action dried yeast
- 1 egg
Method
1 Follow the basic white bread dough recipe until you reach the end of step 3 (see 'Basic white bread dough' for recipe). Then knead the dough for 1 minute and divide it into two-thirds and a third. Shape the pieces into rounds. Cover and leave for 5 minutes.
2 Put the smaller loaf on the larger one. Push two fingers through the centre to the botton to join them. Put on a lightly floured baking tray, cover and leave for about 45 minutes, until doubled in size. Meanwhile preheat oven to 220C/Gas 7.
3 Beat egg with a tablespoon of water and a pinch of salt. Brush over the glaze and bake for 45 minutes, until golden and hollow sounding when tapped beneath. Cool before slicing.
