Boston baked beans
If there are any leftovers, they make the best beans on toast!
Serves 8
Preparation time 20 minutes
Cooking time 50 minutes
Ingredients
  • 0.5tbsp olive oil
  • 250g smoked streaky bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 5 x 300g cans of haricot beans
  • 55g dark brown sugar
  • 45g black treacle
  • 85g tomato ketchup
  • 1tbsp dry English mustard powder
  • pinch Asda ground cloves

Method
1 Preheat the oven to 170C/ Gas 3. Heat the oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the bacon until crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

2 Add the onion to the pan and fry for 10 minutes, until softened but not coloured.

3 Stir the beans into the onions with the chopped streaky bacon, then add the rest of the ingredients, plus 1 teaspoon of salt, and mix everything together thoroughly. Stir in 150ml water.

4 Bring to the boil then cover and cook in the oven for 50 minutes. Add some more liquid occasionally if the mixture is beginning to look too dry. Tastes delicious served with potato wedges and a tomato and red onion salad.
