Preparation time 15 minutes
Cooking time 2 hours
Ingredients
- 225g strong wholemeal flour, sifted
- 1tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 75g currants
- 225ml Asda full-fat milk
- 75g black treacle
Method
1 Preheat oven to 170C/Gas 3. Grease a 450g loaf tin. Butter a piece of foil slightly bigger than the tin and pleat it. Put the flour, bicarbonate of soda, half a teaspoon of salt and currants into a bowl and make a well in centre.
2 Stir in the milk and treacle. Pour into the tin and cover with pleated foil, then tie with string – the pleats will allow the bread to rise. Put the loaf tin into a roasting tin, and pour in boiling water to halfway up the loaf tin. Cook for 2 hours, keeping the water topped up as necessary. Cool before removing.
