Ingredients
- 550g cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped
- 1kg Asda pitted dates, chopped
- 25g piece root ginger, peeled
- and finely grated
- 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
- 600ml Asda white wine vinegar
- 1⁄2tsp ground allspice
- 500g soft brown sugar
Method
1 Put all the ingredients, except the sugar, in a large saucepan. Simmer, uncovered, until the dates and apples start to soften.
2 Add the sugar and stir until it dissolves. Simmer gently for 45 minutes until thick and syrupy.
3 Spoon into sterilised jars, seal and cool. Store in a cool, dark place for at least 4 weeks, and eat within 3 months. Once opened, keep in the fridge and use within 2 weeks.
